Australia’s Jason Belmonte continues his dominance of the Professional Bowlers Association tour, by winning the 2022 PBA Scorpion Championship at the World Series of Bowling XIII in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
Belmonte had to do it the hard way though, after grinding his way through 10 qualifying games, he managed to qualify in 16th place for the round of 16.
The two-handed phenomenon from Orange, New South Wales would then defeat Kyle Troup (1st) then Chris Via (9th) in two best-of-five matches to qualify for the televised stepladder finals in 4th position.
Belmonte then had to win four-straight matches in the finals, taking down Patrick Hanrahan, PBA Hall of Famer Tommy Jones and two of his biggest rivals on tour, EJ Tackett and Anthony Simonson on his way to securing the PBA Scorpion Championship.
The win marks his 28th career title, nine of which he has won at the World Series of Bowling and the third of this season.
“Boom! What a night to earn my 28th PBA title. Running the ladder against EJ (Tackett), Tommy (Jones), Packy (Patrick Hanrahan) and then Anthony (Simonson)!
“Bowled out of my mind on what become a brutal (oil) pattern! I now have 3 titles for the season and am motivated for more,” an excited Belmonte said on Twitter.
Adding to his three titles in 2022, is a third-place finish at the US Open, a fourth-place finish at the PBA World Championship and a top 10 finish at the PBA Tournament of Champions. Belmonte’s dominance this season thus far, has him as clear favourite to win a record-equalling seventh PBA Player of the Year award.
But Belmonte remained steadfast when asked on FS1 about the possibility of joining PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr at the top of the list of most Player of the Year awards, choosing to remain focused on the upcoming USBC Masters and PBA Playoffs over the next month.
